With pedestrian fatalities rising nationwide, the urgent need for safer roadways has never been more…
BFF on the PROWL
Are you wondering who are those peds with clipboards crossing at marked crosswalks throughout the City of Orlando and Orange County? Well, they are the BFF data collectors measuring driver yield rates after high-visibility enforcement waves.
Some of the biggest yield rate improvements were on the higher speed roads. Take Semoran Blvd. & Curry Ford Rd. When we first started tracking this crosswalk, drivers only yielded 38% of the time. After two waves of enforcement, the yield rate jumped to 53%. Goldenrod Rd at the Cady Way Trail crossing and E. Michigan St. & Orange Ave saw a 30% increase in drivers yielding to pedestrians.
Other notable observations: I-Ride Trolley and taxicabs always yield to pedestrians along International Drive.
These documented efforts indicate continuous education and enforcement efforts are improving street safety but we can agree it’s just a start.
