Commissioner Nelson Puts His Best Foot Forward at Pine Hills Road Operation BFF

 

Media turn out to tell viewers about Operation Best Foot Forward and why they must yield to people walking

As Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and Orlando Police Department (OPD) were out enforcing Florida’s driver yield law during February’s Operation Best Foot Forward, local media were telling thousands more why the operation was taking place.  Spectrum News 13’s Ryan Harper showed how Orange County is using Operation Best Foot Forward as one tool to try and remedy the dangers on Pine Hills Road.

Harper spoke to Orange County Commissioner Bryan Nelson and local residents who want to see more enforcement near Evans High School.  BFF data shows that only about 15% of drivers yield to people walking across El Trio Way & Pine Hills Road.  Yield rates at crosswalks like this one with speeds above 35 mph have a much lower yield rate than on lower speed roads, which is probably why the Orange County Government conducted a study of this very same stretch of road last year.

Commissioner Nelson also mentioned some engineering improvements coming to Pine Hills Road.  Orange County is developing strategies to safely and efficiently accommodate the needs of all users, not just drivers, along the corridor.

“Mainly we’re talking to the driver,” BFF’s Amanda Day told Harper. “But don’t forget; the driver ends up becoming a pedestrian the minute they get out of the car.”
