Advocating for Pedestrian Safety Through Sign-Waving Campaigns

In August 2024, Best Foot Forward (BFF) launched a series of sign-waving campaigns across Brevard, Volusia, and Marion Counties as part of the “3 E’s” approach: Educate, Engineer, and Enforce. This campaign focused specifically on Education, aiming to raise awareness among drivers about pedestrian safety at high-risk crosswalks. With shockingly low compliance rates—some as low as 10%—these efforts were critical in reminding drivers to prioritize pedestrians, particularly in school zones and busy intersections. Each event highlighted the importance of visibility, collaboration with local partners, and the impact of increased driver awareness in making streets safer for everyone.

Stadium Parkway, Viera

Earlier this year, Stadium Parkway underwent significant engineering and enforcement efforts, yet the driver stop rate at this midblock crosswalk was still less than 60%. To reinforce these efforts BFF launched an educational campaign, engaging 191 drivers at this busy crosswalk, aided by new stop bars and signage. Many drivers stopped well before the crosswalk, likely assuming enforcement was in effect a nearby worker told BFF. Space Coast TPO joined in waving signs, and the Brevard Sheriff’s Office honked in support, reflecting a strong community-wide commitment to improving pedestrian safety in the area.

Wickham Rd. & Trimble Rd., Melbourne

The sign-waving campaign at Wickham Rd. and Trimble Rd. occurred during the busy morning school rush, where alarmingly fewer than 10% of drivers typically stop at the crosswalk, despite many children crossing to Sabal Elementary. With pedestrian safety at risk, BFF engaged 922 drivers, urging them to slow down. The crossing guard observed better driver behavior in the mornings, though a few impatient drivers sped around slower vehicles even with flashing school zone lights. Melbourne Police showed support with a double honk, underscoring the urgent need for better compliance, especially after the tragic pedestrian fatality less than two miles north on North Wickham Road in November 2023. This incident highlights the critical need for improved driver awareness to protect vulnerable pedestrians and prevent future tragedies.

Beach St. & Cedar St., Daytona Beach

Daytona Sign Waving Campaign

On August 21, 2024, BFF representatives held a sign-waving campaign at Beach St. & Cedar St. in Daytona Beach, where fewer than 40% of drivers stop for pedestrians. Engaging 113 drivers, the campaign raised awareness about pedestrian safety in this high-risk area. A local neighbor shared stories of frequent close calls at the crosswalk and explained that the flashing pedestrian lights were replaced with standard signs after a hurricane. The campaign also garnered support from nearby businesses such as Reef World, highlighting the dangerous conditions along Beach Street’s busy corridors.

NW 16th St. & NW 12th St., Ocala

Ocala Sign Waving Campaign

At an Ocala school crossing with compliance rates alarmingly below 20%, BFF led a targeted pedestrian safety awareness campaign, engaging 141 drivers. The visible support from the Florida Department of Health and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office amplified the campaign’s reach. While many drivers responded by slowing down and acknowledging the effort, the low compliance rate highlighted the persistent dangers pedestrians face daily at this crossing. With traffic fluctuating due to a nearby stoplight, the campaign effectively used key moments of engagement to drive home the message, emphasizing the critical need for continued awareness and action to protect vulnerable pedestrians in high-risk areas.

The August 2024 Best Foot Forward campaign for pedestrian safety effectively raised awareness across multiple high-risk crosswalks in Brevard, Volusia, and Marion Counties. Through educational efforts, BFF engaged over 1,600 drivers, increasing driver awareness at dangerous crossings, many of which had alarmingly low yield rates. These campaigns highlight the importance of continued advocacy, collaboration with local partners, and community support in making our streets safer.
